What Do I Actually Want? How to Hear Yourself Beneath the Shoulds | Seer Sessions Podcast with Jina Seer
SEER SESSIONS #288
There’s a question I come back to again and again:
What do I actually want?
It sounds simple. But for a lot of us, it isn’t.
Especially if you’re good at navigating the external world. You can read a room. You can see what other people need. You can figure out what makes sense, what would be responsible, what would move things forward.
And then someone asks what you want and suddenly there are twenty people in your head.
Is that realistic?
What would they think?
Should I still want that at this age?
Would that make any money?
Am I allowed to do that?
Shouldn’t I want something else?
Sometimes we interpret all of that noise as I don’t know what I want.
But I’m not convinced that’s always true.
Sometimes the desire is there. We’ve simply become incredibly fast at extinguishing it. The transcript makes that distinction explicitly: the answer can appear and then be immediately buried under questions about realism, expectations, age, or what another person will think.
In this episode
I’m talking about what it means to become more familiar with your own wants without turning every desire into an instruction.
Maybe you want to spend a month in Italy and you absolutely cannot do that right now.
Fine.
What is it about that month in Italy that you want?
Slow mornings?
Beautiful surroundings?
Long meals?
More novelty?
Less responsibility?
Time when nobody needs anything from you?
You may not be able to have the entire thing today. But once you understand what the desire is pointing toward, you can begin bringing pieces of it into the life you already have.
That’s valuable information.
Your practice
For the next couple of weeks, pay attention whenever some version of this crosses your mind:
I want…
Don’t turn it into a goal yet.
Don’t add it to your to-do list.
Don’t justify it.
And don’t immediately explain to yourself why you can’t have it.
Just notice.
Then notice the thought that comes next.
Maybe it’s:
That’s stupid.
You don’t have time.
Someone will be disappointed.
People like you don’t do that.
You should be focused on something more productive.
Now you have two pieces of information:
What you wanted.
And what you’ve learned to tell yourself about wanting it.
That’s where things get interesting.
Coming next
In the next episode of Seer Sessions, we’ll take this question deeper with a hypnotic journey to the Higher Self.
You don’t have to arrive knowing what you want.
The practice is about getting underneath some of the mental chatter, expectations, analysis, and surface-level answers long enough to see what is actually there.
As I say in the episode, my job isn’t to tell you what you want. It’s to create the conditions in which you can hear what is already within you.

TRANSCRIPT
Jina Seer (00:00.418)
Hey everyone, it's Jina. You're listening to Seer Sessions, the podcast where I share conversations and guided hypnotic journeys to help you quiet the mental noise so you can hear yourself more clearly and make choices that feel like your own. Wow, September. Are you feeling the back to school vibes? I love a fresh notebook, maybe some new gel pens for myself.
I just love the back to school vibe. And for me, the summer is a time where I tend to look back on where was I at the first part of the year? Like, what did I want for this year? How is that going? What kind of changes do I want to make? Kind of for the back part of the year. And a lot of times I start to implement those changes like around September. And it's probably all of that subconscious programming for the first, I don't know.
22 years of my life or something like that. But if you're like me and you feel that way this time of year, it can kind of bring up a lot of feelings. And I know a lot of my clients and I have wrestled with this in the past, but it's this idea of like, what do I actually want? Not necessarily like, what makes the most sense or what's most productive, right? Like we're typically living in that. We want.
Things to make sense. We want to be productive. But I think when we are so good at like navigating the external world and like reading the room and reading other people. And to be honest, like when we're productive, creative, capable, we often take on that role for other people. And maybe you're like I used to be, where
I could easily see what other people needed to do, good moves for them, ways for them to get ahead. I could clearly see, like if someone's down in the dumps, I can be like, why don't you do A, B, and C? That always kind of lifts you up. And for a long time, those were things that I could not figure out for myself. Like when it came to this question of like, what do I want? A lot of times my answer was like,
Jina Seer (02:22.56)
Almost like, well, I like what I have, but it doesn't totally feel like me. Or I would kind of get caught in these loops of like what someone like me should be doing or should be wanting. And none of that shit worked for me. So if that question feels deceptively difficult for you to answer, or maybe you have an answer, but then all these other ideas or I call voices like in my head come in.
And it kind of shuts it down. Like that's not realistic, or what will this other person think? Or what should I want at this age or this phase of my life? I shouldn't be doing that. I should be doing this. I should want to do that instead. All of that stuff can make it very difficult to know how to move forward and to create a life, make some decisions that actually feel like your own. Sometimes people don't have they
do not even have an answer to that question. And sometimes the answers that come in are immediately like extinguished. They're put out by all those questions, right? Is it realistic? What would this other pe person think? I shouldn't want that, or that's not realistic. All of those voices or those ideas that like extinguish those ideas that you have, those desires that you have, it can make it feel like you do not have an answer when you actually do.
And that's what I've found is that a lot of my clients, when they say, but I don't know what I want there, they do. It's just their mind has made such a practice to stuff, swallow, stifle what they actually want because it hasn't been seen as realistic, or the people around them just frankly won't give them the space to do it or won't allow them to do it. And that can look
so many different ways. And it really, none of that actually matters for today. We're just going to be digging into that question. And looking back on my own life, I can see so much of my life was spent in that space of believing that I didn't know what I want, or taking the shoulds or what culture would say someone my age and whatever phase I'm in should want. And trying to apply
Jina Seer (04:46.382)
Apply that to my life and like really make it stick. And it always felt like it was someone else's desire for me that I was trying to create my life around because essentially I was. And that's what happens. Like when you are out of touch with what you want, that strong sense of like where you're going, who you are, it's hard to stick up for yourself. It's hard to advocate for you.
And what you want to do. And when we're not doing that, then everybody's desires and requests for us start to just take the place of what we really want to do, like what our soul would be nourished by, what our mind would be interested by, what our body would be excited about. It's almost like when we don't have that, when we're not carrying that flame for ourselves.
Than everybody else's opinions and desires just fill in the blank. So it actually goes much deeper than what you want. And it's about getting in touch with yourself and knowing yourself. Knowing yourself enough so you can recognize your own responses to that question instead of what the world wants you to do, who your family wants you to be.
What your partner thinks you should do, what society thinks you should do. And it's so much more than just being out of touch with what you truly want in this life. I think that when we can get in touch with like who we truly are, then what we truly want becomes even more clear. And we gotta hold that flame. No one else is gonna do it. And if you're anything like me, I used to hold that flame for everybody else.
Accept me because I didn't know. I didn't know. I didn't know me. And if you've been listening to this podcast for years, which some of you have, thank you. Years ago on this podcast, I remember recording episodes where I would say things like, But I don't know who I am, or I don't know what I want. And I didn't know what I wanted because I didn't know who I was. I was completely out of touch with what Gina really wanted.
Jina Seer (07:08.822)
Like what kind of life would really work for me? I prefer to live alone, be single, travel a lot, and that's just not the life. Like honestly, the culture is suspicious of that. The culture is suspicious of a woman who doesn't need or want a man. They are suspicious of a woman who doesn't have children. And
It's not just my experience. The clients that I have who are women without children or women who are single without children, they're often told, like people in their life will tell them things that are basically like, I don't know how to relate to you because you don't fit into this box. And that can be incredibly disorienting.
Because it's like, I feel like I I always felt like, God, I'm doing all the right things. And still like certain people won't accept me. Certain people seem weird by my desires. And we have to quiet all of that external noise and really turn up the volume of what's going on within us. Now here's the thing though. When it comes to like following your heart, following your desires, you know, a lot of people
kind of give the side eye to that message or like, not everybody should. And this podcast isn't for everybody. This podcast is very niche. The women who are attracted to my work are very good-hearted. They're very empathetic. They're very sensitive. They can read a room. They they're like highly capable, not only in their own life, but like helping the other people in their life become even more capable. And
So yeah, should really bad person do everything that they want? No, probably not. But you're a good person and you've got a good heart. You came here with a purpose, I believe. And you're never gonna get to that if you're out of touch with who you are and what you want. So let's address that. This idea of like following your desires can become, you know, dangerous or whatever, because
Jina Seer (09:27.488)
Sometimes, especially if you're very depleted, very wrung out by your life, your desire might be, I want to stay in bed all day. And that's valid, right? But you can't like live a life doing that. I mean, unless someone's gonna pay you to stay in bed all day, that's not really the way this world works currently. But it's still worth knowing that that is your desire. A lot of times.
We will just say, I know for me when I was in a job I didn't like, in a living situation I didn't like, in a relationship that was, you know, relationships that weren't great for me. I wanted to stay in bed all day too. It's worth listening to that because if you want to stay in bed all day, that's someone who has had it. That's someone who is not interested in the life they've created outside of that bed.
It's still worth listening to that. Now, can you stay in bed all day? No, but I think if that's your desire, maybe you should do that every once in a while. Recharge your battery. And if you can't do it, or you can do it either way, if you want to stay in bed all day, it's you gotta ask, like, why? And what would make me want to get out of bed? And do I want to be someone who wants to stay in bed? And if not,
What would it take to make me feel excited to get out of the bed every morning? I know for me, I went through a big chunk, like in my late 20s and my early 30s, where when my alarm would go off and I would have to like get up and go to my corporate job, all I wanted to do was lay in bed. And I just don't think that's our natural state.
I mean, yeah, if you're exhausted and you've been overgiving as a lifestyle for years, then you deserve some time in bed. You need to relax. But that's not the thing that you should just do forever, right? And we gotta pay attention to that. And with that example, a lot of times that comes into our head and we completely dismiss it. And it's like, I can't do that. That's not realistic. I don't want to be someone who lays in bed all day.
Jina Seer (11:46.872)
But you have to know there is a part of you that's like screaming out for rest. So getting in touch with those wants, even if you can't do anything about it right now, will change how you make your next decision. It will change how you know yourself. And in that, you can start to, you know, see things differently. Maybe think of an idea that you didn't think of before.
Or give yourself permission to take a day of rest if you need it. In 2021, I started taking long road trips by myself. And at the time I was married. And one of the things that kept coming into my mind before I started taking these road trips was I wanted to road trip. I wanted to, my work was remote. I had made it that way. The pandemic had pushed me even more in that direction. And I wanted to travel. but
person I was married to couldn't slash didn't want to. And so I was always waiting for him. And then I was always waiting for my friends to do something fun, to go on a trip. And I just found myself always waiting. And then pretty soon I got so fed up with it that it was like, I want to do this. And then it was like, all right, you're gonna have to do it alone. What is that gonna take? And it took me a while to figure it out.
But eventually I kind of started to see, like, one of the reasons I don't do that is because I feel guilty. I feel guilty leaving my house. I feel guilty leaving to the the person I was married to at the time. I felt guilty leaving my dogs. And I really started to question that. Like, do I need to feel guilty about this? Do I really? Like, before I got married to this man, he enjoyed living alone. He was a full ass human.
living on his own, doing his own thing. And so I remember talking to him and just having an honest conversation of like, I'm feeling guilty about this. W how do you feel about it? And no surprise, he's a whole ass person. So he was like, Go for it. I want you to have fun. And eventually he started traveling more for work. And then it was kind of this nice balance, right? Cause then he started saying to me, I hate traveling for work or
Jina Seer (14:11.014)
I'm really dreading this trip. And I'd be like, why? And he'd be like, I just feel so guilty leaving. And it's like, Bro, don't. I if you leave, then I can leave. You know, like we have to be in touch with those things that we want. And then we have to be in touch with the reasons why we're not doing it. Because it was that one simple conversation where I was like, All right, look, my guilt is really blocking me from doing these things that I want. Can I just do a reality check? Like
The people who I feel guilty about, like how do they actually feel about it? And yeah, is it when you're sharing a house and responsibilities with someone, is it easy when they leave? No. But life is not easy. And if you live an easy life, give it a little bit and you're gonna be bored. Right. So it's like we are just our human DNA is just made to evolve. We are made to get better.
Most people want that. And so knowing exactly what you want, knowing who you are, then you can start to see, and these are the reasons why I think I can't have that. Let me just double check that. And then pretty soon you thought it was a locked door, but all you had to do was turn the handle and walk through it. And now you have this thing that you've always wanted. Now the way I just explained my story.
made it sound so smooth and so slick and so easy. And I want you to know that since 2013 in my brain, I was like, I want to travel more. I want a road trip. I want to see shit. I don't want to just be stuck at home all the time. Like, there's this thing that was invented 20 years ago called the internet. Like why am I chained to this desk? Like why can't I be seeing new things and doing new things?
And that was in 2013. And I didn't I had gone on like road trips and different trips, obviously, like in that time, but it wasn't until 2021 where I was like doing it the way I actually wanted to do it, and doing it as often as I wanted to and as often as I could. My hope for you is that that is not an eight year process for you. I mean, in some ways it was like a whole lifetime in the making for me.
Jina Seer (16:33.016)
But what I want to do is share this information and later in a couple weeks I'm going to give you that hypnotic journey so you can kind of speed up that process. You can get to know yourself faster, know what you want, even if it is just one tiny little change, and then give you the ability to see it clearly so you can actually take the steps and get there a lot quicker than I did.
Okay, so let's take something like maybe you're like, I've always wanted to spend a month in Italy, but I can't afford it, or I have children I can't leave, or I married a man who's kind of like a child and I can't leave him. Sorry about your luck. Then I would say that's still valid to know that you want a month in Italy. Like, what is how do you envision that month? Is it slow mornings? Is it late nights? Is it good food?
Is it good wine? Is it certain type of scenery? Certain type of vibe? Even if you can't get the thing you want right now, you can kind of break apart like what in that do I actually want? And how much of that can I get in my life today? And that is so important, even for the idea of manifesting. In my own life, I don't use the word manifesting because it just seems like such a
self-helpy Instagram thing and I'm just so repulsed by that stuff. But even though I'm in the self-help behavior change industry, but if you think of something as manifesting or if you think of just like getting to your goals or changing your life so it's more aligned with who you are and what you want, that's so powerful to be like, I want this thing. Okay, I can't have that thing as it's packaged.
How can I get those tiny little pieces of that in my life? So maybe you envision those slow mornings in Italy. Maybe you can ask your family, or maybe you live alone, and you can just schedule a slow morning. Once a month, once a week, every damn day, maybe, maybe that's your goal. So our wants and desires, even if we can't do anything about it right now, can still greatly change our life today.
Jina Seer (18:53.312)
And it'll 100% train change your future. Because if the only thing we're thinking about always is like the rat race we're currently in, then we're never gonna get out of it. So really tapping into those desires is what's gonna help you kind of position your compass, like where are you headed? And how much of that can you actually get in your life today without doing that big thing or without being able to get there quite yet.
So if in your life you're kind of feeling restless, you're feeling like I want more, this isn't me, I feel a little trapped or stifled. The question is not what should I do? I think the question is what do I want? And if you can't get in touch with what you want, you're in the right place. Because I am going to give you something even more practical than that bangin' question for clarity.
So for the next few days, or maybe all month, or maybe the rest of your life, just notice every time a desire pops in your head. Every time a little part of you goes, I want, insert whatever, just notice it. Like you don't have to act on it. You don't have to even take a step in that direction today. You don't have to tell anybody about it. And good lord, do not justify it, do not swallow it.
You don't have to do anything with it. That's something that I've noticed on my own journey way back when I was confused about it. Was that a lot of times I wouldn't even acknowledge a want or a desire because I felt like I can't do that or people like me don't do it. And so I had been trained, I had so many wants and desires that were not accepted by the culture, by my family, and wasn't
demonstrated in life around me that it was easy for me to just swallow those quickly or just kind of check them off as like not realistic. And I believe it got to a point where every time a desire would bubble up, before I was even consciously aware of it, something in my brain just like swept it under the rug. So pay attention to what you want and do it without
Jina Seer (21:14.092)
this pressure of like now you gotta do something with it, you know, you can see the truth, you can see something that needs to be done and not do anything about it. So as you're going through life, like if you note if you see something on Instagram or wherever and you're like, I wanna go there, or I want one of those, or I want more time alone, or I want to talk to this friend more often, or I want a friend like that, or
I wanna learn these things, or I wanna stop doing this thing, or I want my morning or some other part of your day to feel different. Pay attention to all of that. Even if you're like in your closet and you're like, I want clothes that make me feel great, right? Maybe you're not in a position to buy a whole new wardrobe or take the time to decide what would be in that wardrobe, but you knowing that your clothes currently make you feel that way.
Will change how you buy your next thing. Because you're gonna be like, well, does this do the thing that the other things are not doing? So you can catch it. And if you're like me, things stick a little bit better when I'm writing. So almost every single morning I spend at least like 10 minutes just writing in my journal. And oftentimes things will come in that I wasn't consciously aware of. Or after I write it down.
I'll be like, yeah, I have been thinking about that a lot. So it's not about doing anything with it. I mean, if you can do something with it, great, go for it if it's easy. But sometimes when we feel like we have to take action on every single idea we get, a part of our brain will just like not show us every idea. So really, really let that go. Like resist the urge to feel like I gotta put this on the to-do list or
Resist the urge to be like, I'm so far behind, or I'll never get it. Just notice what's coming to mind. I want that. I want to do that thing. And then if that becomes normal, notice the thought that comes later. That's stupid. You don't have time for that. This person's gonna think X and you don't want that. I can't do that at my age, or that won't make me any money, so I can't do it.
Jina Seer (23:35.756)
I should be doing these other things instead. When you can notice the want or desire, that's awesome. That'll change your life, like I said. It's the beginning of creating something that's even more you. But then it's also beneficial to notice the little voices in your head that come up that are like, you can't have that or you can't do that. We knowing that information and kind of removing yourself from it, like knowing that your thoughts are not you.
Knowing that like not necessarily every thought is true, now you're gonna get somewhere. Like now you can see what you want. Now you can see the thoughts that have been blocking you from getting it or getting any sort of version of that in your life. That is my recommendation. Your practice for the next couple weeks. Like, notice what you want and then notice the thoughts that follow that want and just see. I'm curious to know.
What's going on in that mind of yours? So take that practice and know that we can talk all day about what you want. You can make some lists, you can analyze all the options, but at some point it's even more useful to like get underneath all of those voices and even get underneath those surface level desires.
And some of that mental activity, those voices, you know, always does this make sense, weighing the options, it can be very confusing. It can be disorienting, it can cloud what's really there. So huge benefits in just simply noticing and then watching the thoughts that come in in response to that desire. But then even more if you can go even deeper, you can go into that.
Quiet space, that small, still, quiet, wise voice within you. And get underneath all of that mental activity, all of that mental chatter, and see what is actually there. See what's underneath it. See if there's something deeper than just that surface level desire that's come up. So the episode that comes out in two weeks is going to be a hypnotic journey to your higher self.
Jina Seer (25:58.38)
That part of you that is the realest, truest you, your soul self, the truest essence of that spark of divinity that you are. So, with that hypnotic journey, you don't even need to know what you want. Like if you go to that hypnotic journey knowing what you want, it's still beneficial. But it's just as beneficial if you go into that hypnotic journey just being like,
I don't know what I want. Because in that, you can kind of just see what comes up. And it's not necessarily that we're doing this so we can get all the answers and move forward. And you probably will get answers that you can absolutely move forward on. But getting underneath those desires, getting underneath that mental chatter, you're gonna see what's even more true for you. And in that, it just always feels more realistic, more clear.
The action to get there always feels a little bit more smooth, more realistic. So, as always, I am not here to tell you what you want. I am creating the conditions so you can hear what is deep within you, what is asking to rise to come alive in you and in your life. And if you like exploring questions this way, exploring yourself in these deep ways.
I want you to know that's what we do inside the membership. We gather around, we do these practices, whether it's a journaling practice or a hypnotic journey. We engage in these practices to help hear ourselves even more clearly. And then we get to have some conversations about it. And we get to reflect, hear what other people think. It's a good time. You should join us. The link is in the show notes, of course.
So while this time of year is really good at kind of getting us to think of like what's next, what kind of changes do I want? I want you to just sit with what do I want? Period. Now. And then notice the wants that come up as they do, as they will, and then notice the thoughts that come after it. And that's going to give you so much information about you and how to go get those things that you want.
Jina Seer (28:20.47)
All right, everybody, that is our episode for today. Thank you so much for being here. Just notice what you want for the next couple weeks, and I will be back with a hypnotic journey to help you get even more clear, even more deep inside yourself with that question. If you enjoyed this, I would love it if you left a review, leave a comment, if you're on Spotify, Apple, YouTube.
All of that stuff means the world to a solo creator like myself. Thank you so much for being here. I'll be back in a couple weeks.
